The Hornets moniker is available because the New Orleans NBA franchise announced last month that it was dropping the name in favor of Pelicans. The NBA acknowledged that Michael Jordan's Charlotte club was exploring a possible name change, and MJ recently said there was a mixed response. That doesn't seem to be the case.
The Bring Back the Buzz and We Beelieve campaigns have been loud, gathering more than 10,000 signatures on a petition to take back the Hornets name (sign it here).
If the Kings move to Seattle, they'll be known as the Sonics. The NBA also waived the two-year waiting period for New Orleans. It doesn't make sense to keep an unpopular name (Bobcats, chosen by an egotistical owner who wanted his team named for him) over a popular one.
