The former Lakers center told reporters that he "experienced swelling and discomfort in his right knee after" practicing last week -- his first since the trade to the Sixers over the summer. Bynum's words are enough to rip the heart out of 76ers fans.
"It's getting late. I don't know [about playing this season]," Bynum told reporters . "I don't want to play in pain. ... I'm 25, it's my life."
And now comes word from the Philly papers that Bynum is considering season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to clean out loose cartilage.
Yes, it is Bynum's life, and he has a free-agent contract to think of in the summer. Philadelphia isn't playing for anything at this point, so why come back when you have a seven- to eight-figure contract to think of?
The Sixers dealt away Nikola Vucevic, Moe Harkless, Andre Iguodala and a first-round pick to get Bynum in the blockbuster trade that sent Dwight Howard to the Lakers. The deal is looking like a major bust for the Sixers. Deadspin even called the Orlando Magic the winners of the deal.
There's a good chance the Sixers and Bynum will part ways. A 25-year-old big with bad knees? Better sign him to a near-max deal. No.
Fans have to wonder how Bynum ever passed his physical. He underwent a procedure in Germany to strengthen his knee. In September, a bone bruise was discovered in his right knee. A bone bruise in his left knee was discovered in his left knee -- after Bynum went bowling.
