Stein writes that the "Hawks have convinced numerous teams that they're definitely trading" Smith. The thinking is that the Hawks have to trade Smith now, or they will definitely lose him for nothing in free agency. So where does J-Smoove land?
The frontrunner may be the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team deal (Stein doesn't name the third team).
The Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks are also in the running, but those franchises fear they wouldn't be able to sign Smith in the summer, making a deal a half-season rental.
The Washington Wizards may be a team to watch, making everyone but John Wall, Bradley Beal and Nene available to the Hawks, according to ESPN's Chris Broussard.
The Boston Celtics wouldn't mind jumping in the J-Smoove derby, but gang green would rather pry Eric Bledsoe from the Clippers, Stein reports. That doesn't seem likely unless GM Danny Ainge can convince Kevin Garnett to waive his no trade clause. And a deal for Smith would move Paul Pierce out of Beantown. Stein doesn't seem that happening "after everything Pierce has done to restore the Celtics to glory over the past half-decade."
And don't look for the Houston Rockets to jump in. Stein says they're likely to make a move for Smith in free agency.
In talks with ATL for Josh Smith, Wizards have said all but 3 players available: J Wall, B Beal & Nene
