The Charlotte Hornets could be coming comeback.
New Orleans announced the dumping of the Hornets moniker -- in favor of the Pelicans -- Thursday. That opens up the nickname used in North Carolina from 1988 to 2002.
Fred Whitfield, the Bobcats' Sports & Entertainment President and COO, issued a statement after the announcement in NOLA:
“We are aware of the impending change regarding the team nickname in New Orleans. We are currently in contact with the NBA and conducting our own due diligence relative to this matter. We will not have any further comment until we have completed this process."
Word out of North Carolina was that the franchise had already started to do market research into the name swap. The comments on that Charlotte Observer story point to more people wanting the buzz back than not. Count me as one of them. The NBA was a better place with the Hive.
